A person is travelling from A to B which is 69km.Then he travels from B to C which is on his return but a little off the path. Does the distance between B and C which is technically on his return journey count?

Answer:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

With respect to distance, a person is not considered a traveller (مسافر) until their destination to which they are traveling is equal to, or exceeds, 48 shar’i miles (78 kms) from their place of residence (الوطن الأصلي).

Therefore, in the above scenario, if point C is equal to or greater than 78 kms from one’s home, they are considered a traveler [the moment they exit the boundaries of their respective city].[1]

If, however, the total distance does not amount to 78 kms, then such a person is not deemed to be a musafir and the rules of safar are not applicable.

And Allah ﷻ knows best.
